Meet Erick Alvarado, a member of the San Francisco Day Labor Program!

Erick has been a dedicated and hard-working member of the SF Day Labor Program since February 2009. Before that he worked for 18 years as an industrial technician doing electrical work with industrial refrigeration. Through the Program he has connected with employers who continue to contract him in trades, such as construction, gardening, janitorial and assistant cook positions. He has learned to lay concrete, roofing, and painting. He learned from his mentor, whom he met at the Program, Edgar Gonzalez, how to lay sheet rock and complex tile designs.

To Erick, the Day Labor Program is a place for employers to meet workers like him and better understand their situation. It is a way for different peoples to connect and recognize each other as honest, hardworking people. Erick has a wife and six children who live in Guatemala. The eldest will begin her university training this year. He is so proud of her! Now he is watching his dream become a reality as his hard work goes to putting all his children through college. He enjoys reading and writing inspirational essays for the Program newsletter, El Periodiquito.
