A Tribute to Alexander Peña Alex Pena After serving three years as La Raza Centro Legal’s Development Director, Alexander Peña recently resigned from his position to start law school full-time in the fall of 2015 at UC Hastings School of Law. During his very brief tenure in this position, Alex was instrumental in helping the organization recover from the devastating impact of the Great Recession which resulted in staff reductions and cutbacks in vital legal services to low-income, immigrant, and mono-lingual Latino communities victimized by punitive immigration policies, gentrification and wage theft. Through the strategic use of social media, coupled with tireless donor cultivation and stewardship efforts focused on local law firms, foundations and philanthropically-minded individuals, Alex oversaw a three-fold increase in funds generated from La Raza’s signature annual special event, including breaking a fundraising record during this year’s 42nd Anniversary event. Alex’s connection to La Raza actually dates back to 2012 when he served as a Development intern prior to assuming the position of Development Director and he leaves behind a legion of hundreds of colleagues, friends and associates who wish him the very best in his legal studies and his subsequent legal career. As an expression of appreciation for Alex’s dedication to and support for La Raza and its mission, he was awarded the Guerrero de la Comunidad Award at the 42nd Anniversary event on June 19, 2015. No one is more deserving of being described as a “rising star” than Alex who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to La Raza, his community and social justice.
