Cy Pres Awards

Why designate your cy pres award to LRCL?

La Raza Centro Legal has provided free legal services to the City of San Francisco and surroundings counties since 1973. We are a non-profit legal aid agency and a leader in the provision of excellent legal services by licensed attorneys, to the Spanish-speaking and wider immigrant and low-income communities in the counties of San Francisco, San Mateo, and the Bay Area. All services are offered by bilingual Spanish-speaking attorneys and paralegals. Our mission is to be the most trusted provider of free legal services in Northern California.

When you give your cy pres award to LRCL, you support an award-winning Legal aid. In 2019 we were honored by the County of San Francisco as a Legacy Business. In 2022, we were honored by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors during Women’s History Month, in recognition of our in-person provision of free legal consults several hours a week, throughout the COVID pandemic. LRCL is an anchor legal aid in San Francisco County and the wider Bay Area, as immigrant seek our legal services from the entire Bay Area, the Northern California region, and in the case of newcomer asylum seekers, from points from around the globe.

What is cy pres (also known as residual funds)?

Cy pres is a French term that means “as near as possible” Cy pres awards are designated when there are residual funds that remain in class action lawsuits, probate cases, and other matters. It solves the problem of what to do with residual funds that cannot be distributed to the class members or beneficiaries. The residual funds are put to the next best use, or cy pres, by the court by making a nonprofit charitable organization the beneficiary of the awards. This area of law is governed by the California Code of Civil Procedure Section 384.

Thank you for designating LRCL as the beneficiary of a cy pres or residual fund award.
